Introducing The ISUC Student Chapter

Integrated Sustainability & Urban Creativity Centre (ISUC) - Student Chapter
Raising Awareness of Climate Change and Environmental Concerns

“I believe we are all born in this Earth for a reason. My vision is to encourage individuals to practice more sustainable methods in their lifestyle to make the world a better place and I hope to achieve that exactly throughout my tenure as the President of the Integrated Sustainability & Urban Creativity Centre - ISUC Student Chapter” — (Simerjit Kaur Sagoo, 2021)

Integrated Sustainability & Urban Creativity Centre ISUC is committed to the mission of cultivating “sustainable shaping and innovating” leading us to be needed by the new era. The overall goal of the research center is to establish an international, innovative, forward-looking and research-oriented world-class of think tank comprising of students and academic staff researchers with great sense of mission of the era, international perspective and native characteristics.

The term ‘Environmental Awareness’ has become an imperative term as it not only implies having knowledge about the environment, but also our moral values and necessary education to address environment related problems.

Climate change, is one of the many issues which poses a great threat to our current environment — scenes of flooding and storms, occurrence of drought and fire, extinction of flora and fauna species, showed us just how much climate change can affect our lives.

Simerjit Kaur Sagoo, our third-year Computer Science student from Kenya, is a firm believer that our vulnerable Earth deserves to be heard. It is in desperate need of solutions. Actions are required to be done and now is the time to change.

Together with her enthusiastic team from the Integrated Sustainability & Urban Creativity Centre (ISUC) Student Chapter, they have envisioned to nurture and foster a more sustainable environment while also working towards reducing climate change issues during their tenure.

Recently established on 1st September 2021, the ISUC Student Chapter will be working hand-in-hand with the ISUC research centre’s main objectives that coincide with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) prompted by the United Nations, which attempts to mitigate social-economic challenges in today’s world.

In light of these issues, the student chapter will address at least 2 of these goals, which are:

  • Sustainable Development Goal number 13, Climate Action
  • Sustainable Development Goal number 15, Life on Land

Despite these challenging times, the ISUC Student Chapter managed to raise approximately RM6000 for the FurryKids Safe Haven animal shelter through crowdfunding, extending their helping hands to the furry kids whose homes were destroyed due to an unforeseeable flash flood.

They visited and donated more than RM4,500 to Rumah Kasih and Tong Sim Senior Citizen Centre, resulting in a massive relief for these vulnerable families. Aligned with SDG 13, the team collaborated with Greenpeace Malaysia raising up to RM1,400 which all goes directly to save the forest and combat climate change.

Alongside their advisors, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jason James Turner and Ms. Abbhirami Sivarajan, the ISUC Student Chapter will be initiating more meaningful activities and volunteering programmes for WWF, Greenpeace Malaysia, and MY Clean Beach to foster a more sustainable future.

This perfectly demonstrates their missions and ambitions in the ISUC Student Chapter: instead of focusing on scholarly activities or merely serving as an “entertainment club”, they strive to offer diverse experience and all-round support to inspire more young people of their age to speak up and take action against environmental problems.

With strong leadership and determination, we truly believe the ISUC Student Chapter will strive greater heights and continue to impact more like-minded individuals to make a change.
